I was in band from sixth grade all the way through my senior year of high school. The music was, of course, amazing, but what stands out to me even more was the community. Going into my freshman year of high school, I already recognized people wherever I looked in the halls. If I needed help finding a class, I always knew I could go to a classmate from band and they would help me. Band also taught me responsibility and leadership. I had a responsibility to my peers to be prepared for rehearsals and performances. Being a marching band section leader was my first time in a real leadership position, and I learned so many things that I still use on a daily basis in college. Throughout my time in Haslett, I always looked forward to band class and the outside events, and, now in college, I still play my bassoon nearly every day. I don’t know how my life would have been different if I had not joined band, but I doubt I would be where I am now. I am so thankful for, and proud of, my time with the Haslett Bands and wouldn’t change the seven years I spent with them for the world.
